Cormac Culligan has written exactly what the title suggests. Here is education contained nowhere else.Highly recommended
Having an acute interest in climate change, I found Cormac Cullinan's thoughts helped me better understand the importance each of us have in caring for the earth, or at least doing what we can to keep it in a state suitable for human habitation.
I have always loved nature. I consider myself a deep thinker and very ethical. Cormac taught me much! I love his applications of systems thinking and I love his heart. This is a must read if you care for the Earth!!!
"Wild Law: A Manifesto for Earth Justice" is a call for the next evolution of modern civilization. Some criticism of this book has centered on the practical application of what this book calls for - I didn't read it as a manifesto of practical change, but instead as a manifesto of philosophical change. Humans, whether we want to admit to it or not, are an integral part of the world's ecosystem; we cannot disconnect ourselves from it through scripture or cybernetics... no matter what we do to ourselves - our bodies, our brains, our religions, our civilizations - we will still be a part of the whole. Some would call this the Gaia theory, but to me it is just obvious, common sense. If you kill the predators in an ecosystem, the ecosystem will change; if you alter how we do something, it will change the ecosystem. Everything is connected to some degree or another. What "Wild Law" proposes is that we alter our laws - our very civil structure - to take into account that we are a part of the greater system, and what we do affects that system. Unless we blow the atmosphere off this planet, whether humans are here or not and whether this planet can support human life or not, history has shown that some form of life will likely continue on planet Earth. If we can evolve our civilization to live more in sync with our planet, its ecosystem, and every other living thing, we can enhance our chances of continuing to be a part of that system.A Guide to my Book Rating System:1 star = The wood pulp would have been better utilized as toilet paper.2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead.3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted.4 stars = Good book, but not life altering.5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way.
I deem it appropriate that Cormac Cullinan raises the central issue confronting humanity in the central pages of "Wild Law." In Chapter 8 ("The Question of Rights"), the fundamental Earth right of a river is considered. Human activities that constrain the river's right to flow must be prohibited and the river given precedence throughout its customary floodplain. The assertion by some reviewers that Earth jurisprudence, in recognizing Earth rights of non-human entities, is a radical concept simplistically embraces the loss of lives, belongings, and homes of flood victims. According rivers their Earth right to flood is a beautifully conservative concept, as is according aardvarks their right to dig, and wolves their right to live on our public lands free of harassment. Earth jurisprudence, the "Wild Law" championed by Cullinan, accords rights to every natural entity by restraining those of every other entity. Far from being a radical notion, we find it embodied in a familiar document according a people "the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them..." As Cullinan states, "...a flooding river is almost certainly acting in accordance with its nature." Written in a conversational style, the book is redundant, and I resented being reminded of what I had read in preceding chapters and told of what I would be reading subsequently. While it may have been better written, "Wild Law" could not convey a more essential nor imperative message.
For all the right reasons, Cormac Cullinan is critical of the state of industrial civilization and he doesn't like its effects on our planet. He passionate for the Earth, which he sees as a whole system, a Gaia. He is at times mystical, with a romantic view of indigenous peoples and their beliefs. His ultimate goal is a new system of Earth governance, with law as the lever. Unfortunately, his justifications for such a transformation are mostly lacking. For example, one might ask why is law the best way to achieve a better relationship between humans and nature? One might consider the ideas of other disciplines as a contrast. Just taking political science, sociology, and economics, to what extent would political reform, environmental social movements or more environmentally-grounded property rights work better or worse than wild law? That's not to advocate any of those, just to say that he needs to take on some alternatives to make his own case.On this and many other points, Cullinan lacks follow through. For example, he makes a nice point that corporations are a legal fiction that society created to serve particular purposes, so one might just as easily give nature fictive rights - - the right of a river to be a river, the right of a species to exist, the right of natural processes in an ecosystem to continue to function. That's a good enough idea to fill a book, working through the details of how to set up legal rights, and how to resolve conflicts with other rights such as human needs. Unfortunately, Cullinan tosses out the idea and then moves to something else. All in all, Cullinan is much better calling us to think about an issue than he is at thinking about the issue himself.
