About the Author
Amira K. Makansi is a wine industry professional who has worked in many if not all aspects of the wine industry. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a degree in history, she quickly abandoned her quest to become a lawyer in favor of pursuing a career in all things beverage-related. She has worked for eight wineries, two distribution companies, and three restaurants, spanning from Chicago's prestigious dining scene to an Alsatian winery whose first vintage predates the French revolution. Amira has also written and published a science fiction trilogy with her mother and sister, the first book of which has been optioned for a Hollywood production.

But more than anything this book engages you with its itsightful glances into a literary world that we sometimes take for granted . This book will serve you well as a literary reference and will inspire you to create your own line of quality beverages to go with it, but let me tell you Amira has nailed it . Ever wonder what would pair with Moby Dick? Catch-22? Frankenstein? Wonder no longer, the author has transcended what would have been a gimmicky concept in lesser hands into a loving celebration of spirits and classics. It's a new way to enjoy clever drinks and well-read novels or newly-discovered favorites. It's insightful, beautifully written and I was pleasantly surprised by dazzling watercolor illustrations that accompany many of the standout recipes. This book will end up on a christmas present idea list for more than a few friends!
With the holidays coming up, everyone on my hostess gift list is getting one of these! It's the perfect package -- sparkly prose, sublime illustrations, compact size. Amira is well read, and knows her way around a library list as well as a cocktail menu. It's a reference work that you'll want to keep handy for all sorts of occasions. However, you'll find yourself returning to it again and again, just for fun and inspiration.
Some interesting pairings here. My quandary now is whether to follow with drink and read, or just read, or ... yep, think I'll just start with the drinks first.
I love this book! As an avid reader and someone who enjoys all beverages, this is the perfect pairing! I cannot wait to explore new drinks and books as well as revisit old favorites but with a paired drink. The guides and recipes are so helpful. Great addition. This book has a tongue-in-cheek charm. It lists books (with clever synopsis) and then presents a recipe for the perfect alcoholic drink to imbibe while reading.It has been warmly received as a gift.
As a reader and drinker myself, I love this! The author's drink pairings are hilarious at times, interesting, and always thoughtful. It makes for a really fun gift, easy to read, easy to flip through. I also am really enjoying Makansi's selection of books--there are some of the tried and true standards, and also some fun contemporary selections that are more obscure. And the drinks--same idea! They range from Budweiser to Butterbeer, from a standard martini to its cousin with olive oil. (Olive oil? I'll have to try this sometime.) And the wines are from all over the world, in many styles.Am I planning to have a drink with my next book? You bet!
I have made it through a "Dark and Stormy Night" (chapter 1) and am surprised to see how much this book is about alcohol and less about books! It is exactly what it says it is: what to DRINK with what you read. It is utterly delightful and would make good book club fare as it skims over so many favorites as it prompts us to recall details while simultaneously educating us more about spirits and their cultural influences and historical nuances.After chapter 1, I began to skip around the book, willy-nilly as it were! "What to drink with what you read" is dry and witty with a hint of "in your face". This scrappy little mini- tome of a book is a fun read and easily managed in the short, single page format.Enjoy it with a variety of cocktails, recipes inside are sure to inspire!
