The author clearly put effort into the story, but I found it to be ultimately disappointing and would not recommend it to a friend.(spoilers below)The good things: The settings and clothing were described well to bring the reader to the past, particularly the fearful atmosphere of the Plague. I liked Elise just fine, and the author developed her journey from naive girl to independent woman quite well. The scene in the beginning really is intriguing and set the tone for a fast pace throughout the story, which I read through quickly even knowing that a depressing end awaited me.The disappointing: Just too many absurd situations and characters, and an abundance of telling instead of showing. I stuck with the book knowing the ending would be sad, but thinking a glorious love story would make up for it. "It was all worth it," James says, but the reader is cheated out of the development of this supposedly passionate relationship. First she hates him, then after a while suddenly she feels sorry for him and we are told that at some point she had started to enjoy their 'meetings'. Rather than tell us that, we should have seen them interacting in a more positive way and come to our own conclusions.The bad guy was ridiculous, her father was completely unbelievable, and even James, come on - no strong young man with obvious principles would put up with that garbage. Quinn and her love triangle was also not compelling for me, they were supposed to be in their 30's or 40's and behaved like teenagers. The rape story was a harsh and not especially inventive way to solve the mystery of her parentage.A more helpful editor should have also picked out scenes that didn't make a lot of sense, like when James follows Elise to Gavin's house. Nothing came of this, so what was the point? He didn't confront her, he didn't report to anyone, it was narratively useless. Same for her trip to the midwife, it would have made more sense if someone had seen the vinegar and known what she was planning, but instead it's just forgotten.Clearly I am in the minority and most readers enjoyed the book. But if you are looking for a Susanna Kearsley-like time-slip double romance feature, I strongly suggest you keep looking.

Every once in a while you stumble over a new writer and think, 'why doesn't EVERYONE know about her? How is it possible I never heard about her before?' From the very first page, I was drawn in and could not put this one down.The plot: This starts with a grab-you-by-the-throat prologue, and then it gets even better. Although it bounces between present day and mid-1600s London, it tells the story of two different sets of people, linked by Quinn Allenby, a forensic archeologist. She can read a person's life far back into the past by touching something they owned, a psychic of sorts. That's the only paranormal aspect of the story. BTW, to call this time-travel is unfair (sorry, time travel fans), because there is none.The characters: The main characters are Quinn, her love interests, Rhys and Gabe, in present day London; and Lord Asher, Elise, and James in the 1600s. All are so well delineated that they're interesting with clearly understandable motivations even when you don't especially like them. *coughLord Ashercough* There were times that I wanted to yell 'just get a clue, Quinn!' because her personal life was such a mess. LOLWould I spend my hard-earned cash on this book? yesWould I recommend to friends & family? yes!Will I search out the next one? you bet, I'm addicted nowIs this a Kindle Keeper (delete on pain of death)? definitelyExcellent writing, a haunting story, a curiously satisfying ending, and the best prologue ever. Did I mention the prologue? Eh. It bears repeating.
