This is, (as are all of the late Tubal Cain's books) an enormous addition to anyone's library, interested in small model steam engines. It is easy and entertaining to read. You must bear in mind however, this was written at a time when safety was very much a personal concern, and some of the materials used are no longer allowed in some countries, so some substitutions will be needed. Any one wanting to add to their knowledge and/or collection of these engines should have this book. As well as volume 1.
I bought this book as a kind of plan B when after ordering Dampf 33/34 (Available through Amazon in Germany) the shipping looked liked it would take months for the book to arrive and I wanted to build some engines as gifts for Christmas 2014. Happily the German Dampf 33/34 arrived in weeks instead of months and it had the specific project I wanted to build.This book has plans for four engines and I considered it a good primer on the topic of small hobby steam engines and being written in British English it is a lot easier to understand than the German Dampf 33/34 book. I may eventually build one of it's projects as well.
I have a mini lathe and a small mill. I don't know if I could build these engines,First I see in the prints 10 BA. I had no idea what it was, So I went to the internetIt is British type thread. I don't have BA taps or dies. Ilive in the USA and I use SAEtaps and dies, In a pinch I would use metric taps and dies.I have watch many of Tubal Cain's U-tubes a have made some of the lathe tool.
This book arrived yesterday and I've only been through a small part, what I have read has been informative if dated. He assumes that you don't know how to do the procedure, documents how to do the procedure and moves on. The procedure is marked so you can easily skip those procedures you already know and understand.His writing is easy to follow and I've enjoyed what I've read so far. He does inject humor as he goes which helps keep a technical book light.Two things to be aware of: 1st) It is dated. The drawings are all hand drawn, no CAD involved. While the drawings are clear and can be read for somebody that is use to todays cold CAD drawings this might be an issue. 2) This Tubal Cain is not the youtube Tubalcain. While both teach how to make model steam engines don't expect Mr. Peterson's voice in this book.
Not as simple as title suggests . For a first time builder I think this book is a bit complex. It assumes working knowledge of steam engines and their components. Look elsewhere if like me you want a step by step text.
The book is very good, but I found that I could buy a vintage steam engine for much less than the material would cost to make one from scratch, and my machining talents aren't that great. I did use it to make a cylinder, piston, and valve to restore a vintage one.
I am happy with this book. It gives some details that I had not considered. The instructions are very concise.
Excellent book for the miniature machinist. I look forward to building several of these engines while learning skills that can be applied to other designs.
