Review
"Growing up, every kid I knew wanted to be Ernie Banks, Chicago's 'Mr. Cub.' But there was much more to Ernie than his MVP seasons or his famously sunny outward demeanor. Let's Play Two captures the best of Banks' playing moments, but also delves deeply into a man who did not seem to want you to know more than you could see. Rapoport, a legendary Chicago sportswriter, has written a fascinating, readable, and impeccably researched book about a man who was a Hall of Famer, but also a decided creature of his times."―Scott Turow"This is a wonderful book worthy of all the energy and vitality Ernie Banks brought to his remarkable career. But it is also a revealing portrait of the often difficult life of a black ballplayer in America and the often lonely man imprisoned and isolated by his exuberant outer image."―Ken Burns"Hooray! Ernie Banks now has the Hall-of-Fame biography he deserves thanks to Ron Rapoport. This well-researched, beautifully written book is everything a baseball fan could want. Cubs fans, of course, will want to buy two."―Jonathan Eig, the author of Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig and Ali: A Life"Rapoport, a 20-year veteran sports columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, delivers what is sure to be the definitive biography of Chicago Cubs baseball player Ernie Bank...This marvelous look at the life of a beloved athlete should be essential reading for baseball fan."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Ernie Banks crossed the bridge from a segregated nation and national pastime to a better place, smiling all the way. Although his smile was real, so were the scarring experiences he smiled through. He was more complicated and interesting than the human sunbeam he chose to resemble. With a reporter's diligence and a historian's sensibility, Ron Rapoport tells Banks' story, and that of the different nations at the two ends of the bridge."―George F. Will"This is the definitive biography of baseball's Mr. Sunshine, and Ron Rapoport is the one writer who knew him best and could tell it like it was -- including the 'other side of sunshine.'"―Bill Madden, author of Steinbrenner: The Last Lion of Baseball

When I saw this book “Let’s Play Two†by Roy Rapoport about the life of Ernie Banks known as Mr. Cub I had to read this book. Being a Cub fan for many years I wanted to learn more about his life and his years playing for the Cubs. I wasn’t too disappointed but the book got too detailed with other things about baseball and the Cubs owner Phillips Wrigley, The Bleacher Bums, the bad 1969 season, and Leo Durocher the manager of the Cubs. It got very boring but picked up on Ernie’s life and now and then to hold my interest. This book was mostly about Ernie playing baseball.I have read the book of Jackie Robinson’s life and what he went through as the first black man to play baseball. Ernie Banks also was one of the early black players and this book went into this also as finding places to stay and eat and the many cities they visited playing baseball. Ernie seemed to flow with the times and kept to himself even as tensions eased and more black players became involved. He did become friends with Mr. Wrigley and visited with him often. He never showed resentment when Durocher would yell as him but Ernie kept making runs and homeruns.I am sorry there wasn’t more about Ernie’s personal life. It was mentioned every so often even remarks by his son but not enough for me. It did say he was married four times so there had to be more about his personal life and living in Chicago. In the back section of this book the author does go into more of Ernie’s life after baseball. The new owners of Wrigley Field gave Ernie a pension where he came to the ball part to entertain the visitors at the park. They gave him an apartment in the Trump Towers downtown Chicago and he stayed here till his death. He never lived long enough to see the Cubs win the World Series.
Until the Braves moved to Milwaukee, the Cubs were "my" team and Ernie Banks was my hero. I kept all of his stats and is some way he helped instill in me a deep commitment to Civil Rights."I kept my mouth shut but tried to make a difference. My whole life, I've just wanted to make people better".Later I went to Mississippi to do legal work in behalf of the movement, and some of my associates felt he should have been more outspoken. I disagreed -- he led for me by quiet example. These words capture a great deal about the man that I admired, not only as a Cubbie, but as a man:"My philosophy about race relations is that I'm the man and I'll set my own patterns in life. I don't rely on anyone else's opinions. I look at a man as a human being; I don't care about his color. Some people feel that because you are black you will never be treated fairly, and that you should voice your opinions, be militant about them. I don't feel this way. You can't convince a fool against his will ... If a man doesn't like me because I'm black, that's fine. I'll just go elsewhere, but I'm not going to let him change my life."This well written, deeply researched book is a real pleasure to read. It brought back many memories, and it taught me a great deal about a boyhood hero -- a hero even now that I am 82.Robert C. RossMarch 2019
